Airborne signs contract for manufacturing LLAMA antenna

Airborne signed the contract with Vertex Antennentechnik for the manufacturing of the carbon composite back-up structure and the subreflector support structure for the LLAMA (Long Latin American Millimeter Array) antenna. The LLAMA project is an Argentine-Brazilian joint initiative whose purpose is the installation and commissioning of a 12 meter diameter antenna in northwestern Argentina at 4700 meters above sea level. This antenna will work in the 90 – 700 GHz frequency band. Airborne was also responsible for the manufacturing of the carbon composite back-up structures of 25 ALMA antennas that are now in operation in Chili. The LLAMA antenna will have a similar back-up structure. The advantage of the use of carbon composite over metals in the back-up structure of astronomy antenna’s is the high specific stiffness and the low thermal expansion of the material making a more accurate antenna possible.
