Automated Ply Placement deployed for high-rate manufacturing in automotive
Excited to share a groundbreaking journey that highlights Airborne’s contribution in reshaping the future of automotive manufacturing. In 2021, we embarked on an ambitious project in collaboration with Teijin Automotive Technologies, Porsche AG, and PINETTE PEI, marking a significant leap forward in the production of composite materials. The project was also selected for the Innovation Awards of JEC 2024.
Our partnership was formed to tackle a unique challenge: producing Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) doors for Porsche, a task that demanded unparalleled precision and innovation. At the heart of this venture was Airborne’s Automated Ply Placement (APP) systems, a technology that has redefined the standards of high-rate manufacturing for dry fiber RTM parts. The APP systems’ capability to achieve exceptional accuracy in material placement was crucial in ensuring that the CFRP doors met the rigorous requirements for crash resistance—a feat traditionally reserved for metal structures.
This video brings to life the essence of our revolutionary approach. It showcases our fully-automated preforming process that seamlessly transforms complex 2D layups into 3D automotive components. This process not only exemplifies our commitment to innovation but also our dedication to sustainability, as it significantly reduces carbon fiber waste without compromising on strength. Through the integration of advanced technologies like sensors, Pick & Place for Freeform shapes, vision systems, intelligent nesting, and auto-correction, a new benchmark is set in the industry.
As we continue to make strides in the field, we invite you to witness the culmination of our joint efforts at JEC World. Join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement that stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and sustainability in driving the automotive industry forward.
